About

Greetings!
A second language has always been an elusive quest for me. I’ve tried Latin, French, and German. I can toss out a few naughty words in Spanish, Thai, and Lithuanian. Each language was a requirement for school and, while I chose which ones to study, I never really made it past the second semester. This blog is a diary of my attempt to learn Swedish. I readily welcome comments by Swedish speakers, especially if it is to correct my Swedish. Hopefully, writing this will enable me to learn faster and remember more.

Why learn a second language?
I’m out of school and have a job, why would I want to learn another language when it isn’t a requirement? Well, why not? I firmly believe that being a lifelong learner is a benefit. It makes me feel good about myself to learn something new, whether it is about computing, aesthetics, math, science, writing, dance, or religion. I plan to live to a ripe old age, and I want to keep my wits about me. Continuing to learn is how I plan to exercise my brain and at this stage, I’ve chosen to learn a new language.

Why Swedish?
So, why do I want to speak Swedish, a language that isn’t really used in the US? Why not Spanish? This is purely a personal choice. There are a few Swedes in my background and I wanted to choose a language I have a personal connection to so that I will be less likely to quit. I would like to be able to hold a reasonable conversation in Swedish. After that, who knows, I may choose to try German or French again or even Spanish – maybe I’ll try them all!
